Feedback to Health Professional

Instructions to Person Providing Feedback (ASPE, 2008)

  • Make a clear transition from SP to offering feedback.
  • Start the feedback session by introducing the person providing feedback and checking in with the student on how they feel the session went.
  • Feedback should be specific, focused, behavior-based, descriptive rather than evaluative, constructive.
  • Use techniques that are known to facilitate the acceptance of feedback, such as sandwiching a negative comment between two positives, using "and" more often than "but," etc.
  • Following feedback, check in with the student to make sure the feedback was received as intended and understood and then thank them, recognizing there efforts.
  • Provide suggestions for further education specific to their educational needs.

Instructions to Actor: (Silverman 2006)

  • Summarize
  • Be empathetic
  • Step out of role to provide FB
  • Give constructive FB
  • Give FB with goals and objectives in mind

Feedback can be provided from both the patient's (lay) perspective and the professional perspective. (Kurtz et al., 2004) Feedback does not have to be limited to the end of the session. The learner and SP can stop the action at any time and discuss what is happening (Kurtz et al, 2004). Thus, we may choose to provide feedback at several points in a session.
