Evaluation Instruments and Strategy

DIRECT TIE IN to the Educational Objectives

  • A checklist, or likert scale,
  • pre/post-test
  • other objective measures
  • self-assessment
  • grading options - full credit for including A in the differential, etc, linked to the clinical skills, knowledge, etc.

These are instruments used to assess and document whether the learner achieved the various objectives.

  1. Knowledge objectives might be assessed by an MCQ test
  2. Skills objectives/behaviors by a checklist
  3. There might be one "rater" for the SP actor to use, another for an expert reviewer of the encounter to use

Checklist of evidence-based practice behaviors (ASPE)[1]):

There will be a check list of desired evidence-based practice behaviors for an ideal patient interview organized in the expected order. The list will be observable or measurable behaviors rather than anything requiring a judgment. There will be clear criteria for what is needed for a behavior to be checked off.

Skills to include in the checklist: (Silverman, 2006) Presence of empathy Use of open-ended questions
