SBIRT Standardized Patient Framework
From Clinicaltools.com
Project: SBIRT Phase I
Need: We need Standardized Patient cases that will allow us to provide primary care providers with the opportunity to apply screening and brief intervention skills for a variety of patients. Standardized patients have been used with medical residents to train them in screening and brief interventions and succeded in increasing their rates of providing screening and brief interventions in the clinical setting (Wilk and Jenson, 2002).
Vision: The Standardized Patient cases will allow primary care providers to practice clinical skills in a time-efficient and effective manner.
Mission: The instructor/evaluator will be able to evaluate the user's SBIRT skills with respect to substance abuse by participating in a Standardized Patient clinical encounter. In many instances the user will have completed the short didactic overview course, although this will not be a requirement. Users will be provided feedback on their skills and suggestions regarding improving them.
Target Audience: Primary care physicians
Goal: Primary care physicians will be able to demonstrate appropriate screening or brief intervention skills or modify these skills to fit the needs of certain patient populations, depending upon which course the user is taking. Skills with respect to the course learning objectives will be demonstrated.
Objectives
We will be provide the opportunity to practice course objectives listed in each SP course.
Implementation and Evaluation
Implementation: We will conduct remote SP interviews using a Drupal module adapted for that purpose after providing the initial patient information.
Evaluation: We will create a rater form to evaluate the target clinical skills.
