Pain and Addiction Project Framework
Overview
During September, we conducted our first usability study of the project's website, PainandAddictionTreatment.com, with the target audience, analyzed the results, and addressed the issues that were raised. We continued to develop the website PainandAddictionTreatment.com's CME course content and Key Info guides in consultation with expert consultants.
Progress During September 2009 by Objective
Objective 1
Develop Skills Training Content
Courses: We completed adding mini-case scenarios to illustrate course content for the first three courses and completed an edit of the third course, ongoing management, which is now ready to send to consultants for review. We began researching and writing content for the fourth core course, Avoiding Diversion.
Resources: This month we continued to add resources identified by expert consultants. We also further combine categories and tags in order to reduce them to a less overwhelming number.
"Key Info" Guides: We revised the Government Regulations and Prescription Drug Monitoring Key Info Guides based on expert consultant feedback.
Objective 2
Build Supporting Functionality
- Taxonomies were combined to make them less overwhelming to the user and easier to manage. A new resource center front page was adapted from this new model.
- The "Add to Favorites" star icon was replaced with a heart icon to differentiate it from the fivestar rating.
- The Related Resources section of the Key Info Guides was standardized to match the Related Resources section of the Courses.
- Excess space and information was removed from the Related Resources section so that users do not have to scroll down as far to access the previous/next navigation links.
- Dropdown menu items were added to the Resources and Forums tabs in response to usability.
- The Favorite Resources View was edited so that it will display even if a user has not added any favorite resources. It now displays the message "You have not added any favorite resources yet." This will make the purpose of the "Add to Favorites" links more clear.
- A new FAQ View was created. The new FAQ View has an "Ask us a question" link already visible on the homepage which eliminates the need for users to "double click", a link to the Glossary, and a "View all questions" link.
- The "Welcome" block was removed in response to usability findings that users were confused about its purpose.
- The title of the "Guided Search" box was changed to "Narrow Your Search" to make its purpose more immediately clear to users.
- The input format of resource pages was changed to "filtered html" to fix a glossary issue on various pages.
- The background of the site was changed to white throughout in response to previous usability findings.
Objective 3
Evaluate Curriculum Content
- We completed revisions on the Informed Consent/Treatment Agreement Key Info guide based on feedback from consultant Nancy Wiedemer.
- We sent several courses and Key Info Guides for expert evalaution:
- Course # 1: Initial Assessment is being evaluated by Seddon Savage.
- Course # 2: Initiating Treatment was evaluated by Howard Heit.
- Key Info Guide: Government Regulations went through an additional round of evaluation by Howard Heit.
- Key Info Guide: Prescription Drug Monitoring was reviewed by Seddon Savage and her edits were incorporated.
Objective 4
Evaluate Interface Design (Usability)
- We conducted a remote usability test with seven members of the target audience this month. This usability test focused on two main components of the website's interface - the Home Page and the Resource Center. In the Resource Center, we were particularly interested in learning about user preferences for searching and displaying resources. Seven physicians were interviewed - 3 Internal Medicine clinicians, 3 Family Practice clinicians, and 1 Primary Care Sports Medicine clinician. Overall, the participants thought the website was user-friendly and the planned website components would help them to manage their chronic pain patients. The results suggested the need for minor changes in the appearance and wording of elements of the home page, and simplification of the resource search process. The complete results and corresponding action statements responding to the results are presented in the Appendix. Except where noted, all action statements have been completed.
Objective 5
Obtain OMB clearance
- Submitted draft version of 60-day notice to Project Officer 5/20/09. Awaiting response. Developed a draft of the summative assessment to be included in the OMB clearance application.
Objective 6
Conduct Summative Evaluation
- Scheduled for year 2. Developed a draft of the summative assessment to be included in the OMB clearance application.
Objective 7
Disseminate Results
- We installed a system to track website usage.
