Monthly Progress Report #3 of 6

Reporting Period: 9/1/08 – 9/30/08

Project Period: 6/9/08 – 12/8/08

Pain and Addiction Project Framework

Overview

This month we further refined the Web Based Training for Pain Management Providers project framework and curriculum outline. We also expanded the functionality for searching Resources so that narrower searches can be made. Finally, we successfully recruited a substantial number of addiction experts and pain experts for the upcoming needs analysis testing.

Progress During September 2008

Objective 1

Determination of ASAM leader, expert consultants and expert advisory panel

  1. We worked with ASAM to obtain a list of email addresses for their members that we used in recruiting for the upcoming needs analysis test.

Objective 2

Evaluate current technologies and literature

  1. Resources. We expanded our data base of over 100 annotated websites to include podcasts and PowerPoint presentations of lectures from professional conferences on pain and/or addiction. They are available at http://painandaddiction.clinicaltools.com/node/134 . The resource database will eventually also include patient handouts, screening tools, and other clinical forms as well as links to physician locaters, other continuing education, and clinical guidelines.
  2. Technologies. We added a database of websites offering CME credit on topics complementary to those offered by our curriculum. We created and organized this table using Drupal's Content Construction Kit (CCK) to organize the fields. In addition, we assigned multiple tags to each resource using Drupal's Taxonomy feature. Tags created include "CME Credit," "Multimedia," "Free," "Drug Funded," "Case Based," "Tools," and many other tags which help describe what kinds of features each course offers, and allows users to search by feature or combination of features.

Objective 3

Develop needs analysis assessments

  1. We took no actions on this objective this month.

Objective 4

Conduct needs analysis

  1. We developed an online survey to recruit specialists in addiction and/or pain. A link for the survey was sent to American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) members in their newsletter. We received over 200 responses from interested users.
  2. From the responses, we developed a recruitment list to be used in the next round of needs analysis which will be conducted in October. These surveys will be for experts in pain or addiction medicine to evaluate the planned curriculum.

Objective 5

Determine the content and design (“framework”) of the proposed educational training modules

  1. Need, Mission, and Vision. We further refined the curriculum need, mission, vision, and constraints emphasizing skill development and innovation. These concepts are described on the Pain and Addiction Project Framework
  2. Course/module content. We developed two alternative versions of the curriculum for evaluation in needs analysis, one based on common pain diagnoses and the other based on stage of addiction. We also added a course specifically on prevention of addiction in order to better respond to this need. Finally, we made miscellaneous refinements to the rest of the curriculum outline. (Links to course outlines are found at the bottom of the framework page.)

Objective 6

Evaluate curriculum plans with advisory panel and revise as needed

  1. The advisory panel will evaluate the revised curriculum in October.

Objective 7

Create Phase II project plan, including delivery, methodology, system architecture, and contents of training program (outline complete design of product and content areas)

  1. We have continued the process of refining the Pain and Addiction Project Framework, transferring it to a wiki format. The wiki development environment facilitates team development of the project framework. As described above, we outlined the content areas for a complete curriculum.
