Title: Medical Student Skills Training on Pain and Addiction Assessment
PI: T. Bradley Tanner, MD
Reporting Period: 11/1/09 – 11/30/09
Project Period: 9/1/09 – 4/30/2010
Overview
We continued to revise the curriculum outline in response to reviews by consultants and have completed a second version in response to their feedback. Additionally, we completed preparations for and began the first needs analysis evaluation with medical students. We also prepared a needs analysis survey for medical school faculty for an evaluation next month.
Progress During November 2009
Objective 1: Develop Curriculum
Develop a complete curriculum plan for 5-7 modules on the topic of pain and addiction
- We completed development of the second draft of the at MS Pain Curriculum, based on feedback received from the expert consultants that responded (6/8).
Objective 2: Conduct Needs Analysis
Conduct needs analysis focused on how best to use a remote standardized patient interview within an online learning module.
- We recruited medical students for the first needs analysis survey, which is available Survey Monkey. Six students had completed the survey by the end of the month and 4 more are needed to complete this evaluation. While we had over 50 students from one medical school complete the screening survey, to gain a variety of perspectives, we are reserving the remaining 4 spots for students from other medical schools. Early results indicate that medical students find SPs useful to practice interviewing skills (100%) and develop confidence (100%) but not to learn new material (17%).
- We continued to develop survey questions for the needs analysis with medical school faculty (n=10), which will be a survey of medical school faculty followed by semi-structured, follow-up interviews.
Objective 3: Design the website and learning experience
Define a prototype in detail including a standardized patient learning experience, case scenarios, interactive questions, didactic information, and links to additional resources
- No action taken this month.
Objective 4: Develop Prototype Course Including SP
Evaluate Interface Design
- No action taken this month.
Objective 5: Usability Testing
Conduct remote usability testing on the learning experience with the standardized patient as a teaching component
- No action taken this month.
Work to be Performed in the Next Reporting Period
Objective 1: Develop Curriculum
Develop a complete curriculum plan for 5-7 modules on the topic of pain and addiction
- Revise the draft according to NIDA's Centers of Excellence.
Objective 2: Conduct Needs Analysis
Conduct needs analysis focused on how best to use a remote standardized patient interview within an online learning module.
- Recruit 4 medical students for the current needs analysis survey and 10 for the next one.
- Complete 1st medical student needs analysis survey
- Analyze data from medical student needs analysis survey and develop action plans in response to results
- Finalize questions for needs analysis survey of faculty and write questions for follow-up interviews
- Recruit for needs analysis: faculty (n=10)
- Start follow-up interviews of faculty completing the needs analysis survey
- Analyze data once faculty needs analysis survey is completed
- Write survey questions for the 2nd medical student needs analysis survey.
Objective 3: Design the website and learning experience
Define a prototype in detail including a standardized patient learning experience, case scenarios, interactive questions, didactic information, and links to additional resources
- Begin developing the content for the case scenario, basing it on progress in other CTI projects in this area.
Objective 4: Develop Prototype Course Including SP
Create the standardized patient case for the prototype module
- Start developing didactic content for prototype course Assessment and Diagnosis of Pain and Addiction.
Objective 5: Usability Testing
Conduct remote usability testing on the learning experience with the standardized patient as a teaching component
- No action planned next month.
