Overview
Progress During October 2009
This project had a great first month with completion of the first draft of a curriculum outline, review by several consultants, and a second version already being developed in response to their feedback. Additionally, we developed needs analysis questions and began internal testing in preparation for a survey of medical students in November.
Objective 1: Develop Curriculum
Develop a complete curriculum plan for 5-7 modules on the topic of pain and addiction
- We completed developement of the first draft of the MS Pain Curriculum, sent it to all consultants, and revised it according to the first two who have replied already. An additional two responded on the last day of the month and two more promised feedback by November 7.
Objective 2: Conduct Needs Analysis
Conduct needs analysis focused on how best to use a remote standardized patient interview within a online learning module.
- We developed an online survey for needs analysis of medical students (n=20) that focuses on preferences in using SPs, attitudes about pain and addiction, and habits and interests using mobile technology. It is available on Survey Monkey at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=E0yQHpB7HursslJMKPN24A_3d_3d
- We also wrote a first draft of questions for the other needs analysis, which will be semi-structured interviews of faculty (n=10)
Objective 3: Design the website and learning experience
Define a prototype in detail including a standardized patient learning experience, case scenarios, interactive questions, didactic information, and links to additional resources
- No action taken this month.
Objective 4: Develop Prototype Course Including SP
Evaluate Interface Design
- No action taken this month.
Objective 5: Usability Testing
Conduct remote usability testing on the learning experience with the standardized patient as a teaching component
- No action taken this month.
Work to be Performed in the Next Reporting Period
Objective 1: Develop Curriculum
Develop a complete curriculum plan for 5-7 modules on the topic of pain and addiction
- Continue to revise the draft according to each review and submit to all expert consultants for input using an online survey using modified Delphi approach.
Objective 2: Conduct Needs Analysis
Conduct needs analysis focused on how best to use a remote standardized patient interview within a online learning module.
- Recruit 20 medical students for needs analysis survey
- Enroll medical students and conduct needs analysis survey
- Analyze data from medical student needs analysis survey
- Finalize questions for needs analysis interviews of faculty
- Start recruitment for needs analysis: faculty (n=10)
Objective 3: Design the website and learning experience
Define a prototype in detail including a standardized patient learning experience, case scenarios, interactive questions, didactic information, and links to additional resources
- Begin developing the content for the case scenario, basing it on progress in other CTI projects in this area.
Objective 4: Develop Prototype Course Including SP
Create the standardized patient case for the prototype module
- Start developing didactic content for prototype course Assessment and Diagnosis of Pain and Addiction.
Objective 5: Usability Testing
Conduct remote usability testing on the learning experience with the standardized patient as a teaching component
- No action planned next month.
