Medical Student Education on Buprenorphine Framework

Overview

This month we focused on gathering data and examining the SP process.

Progress During February 2009

Milestone 1

Gather Round 3 Summative evaluation data

  • Compile Data [1]Preliminary results(n=18) of this evaluation indicate that the modules have a statistically significantly effect on knowledge, attitude, intended behavior and self-efficacy related to treatment of patients with opioid dependence (p<.001). Average pre-knowledge score was 69.36 while the average post-test score was 83.44 (p<0.001). Students showed the most improvement in the area of common comorbidities and pharmacology. Student competency was measured in the following areas: drug detection and screening, comorbid conditions, diagnosis and treatment. Competency (p<0.0006) and interpersonal skills (p=.01) increased quite significantly from pre to post experience. Competency scores increased an average of 44% from pre to post-interview.
  • Report Success Based on our results it is clear that this curriculum is an effective tool for educating students on buprenorphine and opioid use disorder. The addition of a standardized patient component pre and post curriculum allows the students an opportunity to better demonstrate an increase in competencies and clinical skill in a more true to life situation. We have submitted an abstract to [2]AMERSA for a poster presentation to report these preliminary findings.

Milestone 2

Deploy Medstudentlearning.com

  • Timeline We developed a [3]timeline to help everyone determine what should be accomplished each week.
  • Updates We checked the site regularly and gave feedback on how this would work with our current clients.
