Medical Student Education on Buprenorphine Framework

Overview

This month we focused on finding new methods of recruitment for the summative evaluation as well as new methods of organization of participants to streamline the process.

Progress During October 2008

Milestone 1

Expand recruitment efforts

  • Ads. Medical students who participated in the evaluation were polled as to what publications they read the most. As suggested from the results, an ad was placed in the New Physician.
  • Medical school professors. Medical school faculty or researchers with an interest in opioid addiction and treatment with buprenorphine were identified. Individuals were emailed (summative recruitment progress) and asked if they had any interest in using the courses with their students and if they could help in recruitment efforts. So far response has been tremendous as far as students signing up for the summative evaluation. No schools have to date expressed interest in using the curriculum with a class of students.

Milestone 2

Streamline student participation process

  • Online Demographic and Consent. We created an online demographic form and consent form for perspective participants to fill out. The survey also included a date and time entry box for participants to pick their first interview date and time to aid in scheduling.

Milestone 3

Collect Follow-up data on participants

  • Online Survey. We created a follow-up survey assessing student experience with the modules and the standardized patient interviews. They are asked to rate their own performance in the interviews as well other aspects of the interview process.
  • Data Analysis. We began data analysis of round 2 participants. When the study ends we will send all participants follow-up information on their performance.

Work to be Performed in the Next Reporting Period, November 2008

Milestone 1

Expand recruitment efforts

  • Contact medical schools about using the curriculum with students.
  • Continue to recruit students for the summative evaluation prior to winter break.

Milestone 2

Revamp the website

  • Develop vision of bupms website with a standardized patient component.
  • Begin work on site for all medical student education.
