Project Guide

Reporting Period: 06-01-2009 to 06-31-2009

Report Prepared by: Kimberly Lynn Workman, BA, PHCP and Susan Wilhelm, PhD and Laura Andrews, BA

Overview

In June, we attended the ASPE Conference, began development on the SP Document, refined the courses, and joined the ASPE listserve.

Progress During June 2009

Milestone 1

Develop Remaining Content Modules

Task 1: Develop Remaining Educational Content and Features for Modules

  • In June, we refined the MedStudentLearning portal through design changes based on internal usability feedback. The Pharmacology of Alcohol and Neurobiology of Alcohol Addiction course is still being developed. We also developed the SPI (Standardized Patient Interface). This interface allows us for a learner to interview a standardized patient over an online chat function. We will conduct usability for the SPI with medical students in the near future.

Task 2: Gather and Incorporate Feedback From Project Consultants

  • We are still developing the Pharmacology course. Once the courses are completed, our consultants will provide a full editorial review as well.

Future Needs: In the coming months, we will finalize content of the current courses, as well as finalize course content for the remaining course—Pharmacology of Alcohol. Once courses are ready for editorial review, we will contact our consultants for their feedback. We will also conduct usability for the SPI.

Milestone 2

Complete Summative Evaluation of Product

Task 1: Design Evaluation

  • The summative evaluation will be designed once we finalize our course structures.

Task 2: Recruit 80 Medical Students in their Second through Fourth Years of Study

  • Recruitment for the summative evaluation will be completed once we finalize our course structures.

Task 3: Perform Summative Evaluation

  • The summative evaluation will be performed once we finalize our course structures.

Task 4: Analyze Data

  • Data analysis of the summative evaluation will be done once completed.

Future Needs: Once course content is finalized, we will recruit 80 medical students in their second through fourth years of study to perform a large-scale summative evaluation.

Milestone 3

Disseminate Results and Background Information About Curriculum

Task 1: Submit At Least One Article to a Peer-Reviewed Appropriate Publication

  • Once we finalize our courses and receive summative data, we will submit an article of our results.

Task 2: Present Results to Two or More Appropriate Scientific Meetings and at the NIH’s Annual SBIR Showcase

  • In June, we attended the ASPE (Association of Standardized Patient Educators) Conference in Las Vegas, NV. The purpose of attending this conference was to ensure our development appeals to those who work in the area of SPs and are in sync with the opinions of experts. We also wanted to gather input from other SP professionals, get ideas, and get feedback regarding our solutions. CTI made many professional contacts at the conference that will be contacted for possible consultant positions.

Task 3: Contact Leading Medical and Substance Abuse Organizations

  • In June, we subscribed to the Standardized Patient Listserv, which allows us to connect to other schools and organizations producing successful SP programs. We have begun to develop a broad "SP document" that details CTI SP methodology. We will send consultants this package of information once it is completed.

Future Needs: Once the courses and summative evaluation is completed, we will submit at least one article to a peer-reviewed appropriate publication, as well as presentation of results to two or more appropriate scientific meetings and at the NIH’s annual SBIR showcase.
