Report Prepared by: Kimberly Lynn Workman, BA, PHCP and Susan Wilhelm, PhD

Overview

In February, we made further refinements to the alcohol medical student curriculum.

Progress During February 2009

Milestone 1

Develop Remaining Content Modules

Task 1: Develop Remaining Educational Content and Features for Modules

  • In February, we reviewed our currently completed courses. The Pharmacology of Alcohol and Neurobiology of Alcohol Addiction course is still being developed.

Task 2: Gather and Incorporate Feedback From Project Consultants

  • Case outline details were sent to our consultants for feedback. Once the courses are completed, they will provide a full editorial review as well.

Future Needs: In the coming months, we will finalize content of the current courses, as well as finalize course content for the remaining course—Pharmacology of Alcohol. Once courses are ready for editorial review, we will contact our consultants for their feedback. Additionally, we will be developing a Medical Student portal where all CTI Medical School Courses can be accessed.

Milestone 2

Complete Summative Evaluation of Product

Task 1: Design Evaluation

  • The summative evaluation will be designed once we finalize our course structures.

Task 2: Recruit 80 Medical Students in their Second through Fourth Years of Study

  • Recruitment for the summative evaluation will be completed once we finalize our course structures.

Task 3: Perform Summative Evaluation

  • The summative evaluation will be performed once we finalize our course structures.

Task 4: Analyze Data

  • Data analysis of the summative evaluation will be done once completed.

Future Needs: Once course content is finalized, we will recruit 80 medical students in their second through fourth years of study to perform a large-scale summative evaluation.

Milestone 3

Disseminate Results and Background Information About Curriculum

Task 1: Submit At Least One Article to a Peer-Reviewed Appropriate Publication

  • Once we finalize our courses and receive summative data, we will submit an article of our results.

Task 2: Present Results to Two or More Appropriate Scientific Meetings and at the NIH’s Annual SBIR Showcase

  • At present, we are finalizing a number of courses so that we can present these initial results to upcoming conferences as well as get feedback from these audiences.

Task 3: Contact Leading Medical and Substance Abuse Organizations

  • Once we finalize our courses and receive our summative data, we will contact leading medical and substance abuse organizations with our results.

Future Needs: Once the courses and summative evaluation is completed, we will submit at least one article to a peer-reviewed appropriate publication, as well as presentation of results to two or more appropriate scientific meetings and at the NIH’s annual SBIR showcase.
