Report Prepared by: Laura Andrews, BA; Susan Wilhelm, PhD

Overview

In October, we received consultant feedback on our Biological basis course, received feedback on our Cynthia SP case, and disseminated our work through a poster, abstract submission, and publication. We also submitted our first Quarterly report for the ARRA supplement.

Progress During October 2009

Milestone 1

Develop Remaining Content Modules

Task 1: Develop Remaining Educational Content and Features for Modules

  • In October, we published the final version of the Biological Foundations of Addiction course. The Pharmacology of Alcohol course is still being developed. We received consultant feedback from Steve Applegate about our Cynthia Stewart SP case and made refinements. We started to mock up Cynthia on the web.

Task 2: Gather and Incorporate Feedback From Project Consultants

  • Once the final course is completed, our consultants will provide a full editorial review.

Future Needs: In the coming months, we will finalize the content of the Pharmacotherapy course. Once the course is ready for editorial review, we will contact our consultants for their feedback. Additionally, we will refine the MedStudentLearning site, where all CTI Medical School Courses can be accessed.

Milestone 2

Complete Summative Evaluation of Product

Task 1: Design Evaluation

  • The summative evaluation will be designed once we finalize our course structures.

Task 2: Recruit 80 Medical Students in their Second through Fourth Years of Study

  • Recruitment for the summative evaluation will be completed once we finalize our course structures.

Task 3: Perform Summative Evaluation

  • The summative evaluation will be performed once we finalize our course structures.

Task 4: Analyze Data

  • Data analysis of the summative evaluation will be done once completed.

Future Needs: Once course content is finalized, we will recruit 80 medical students in their second through fourth years of study to perform a large-scale summative evaluation.

Milestone 3

Disseminate Results and Background Information About Curriculum

Task 1: Submit At Least One Article to a Peer-Reviewed Appropriate Publication

  • Our RLSP work was published in the Journal of the International Association of Medical Science Educators.

Metcalf MP, Wilhelm S, Buchanan A, Rossie K, Tanner TB. Use of Internet Based Chat in a “Remote Live Standardized Patient” Skills Training. Journal of International Association of Medical Science Educators. 2009; 19(3):70.

Task 2: Present Results to Two or More Appropriate Scientific Meetings and at the NIH’s Annual SBIR Showcase

  • We presented our work at the 2009 IPS conference. We also drafted a presentation for the 2009 AMERSA conference in November.

Task 3: Contact Leading Medical and Substance Abuse Organizations

  • Once we finalize our courses and receive our summative data, we will contact leading medical and substance abuse organizations with our results.

Future Needs: Once the courses and summative evaluation is completed, we will submit at least one article to a peer-reviewed appropriate publication, as well as presentation of results to two or more appropriate scientific meetings and at the NIH’s annual SBIR showcase.

ARRA Milestone

Create a skills practice module to complement the curriculum. The module will include 4 remote live standardized patient practice experiences. Creating the standardized patient cases that are realistic and targeted to teach specific clinical skills will be the major focus.

Task 1: Define 4 SP cases, including presenting problem, relevant history, appropriate lab results, guidelines for implementation.

  • We started to draft possible cases for the ARRA supplement

Task 2: Verify accuracy and believability of SP case with appropriate consultants.

Task 3: Create 4 SP experiences with consultant input.

Task 4: Conduct usability testing with 10-20 medical students '
