Reporting Period: 09/01/09 – 09/31/09
Report Prepared by: Laura Andrews, BA
Overview
In September, we made met with Joey Woodyard, the Director of the Clinical Skills & Patient Simulation Center at UNC Hospitals. In addition, we split the Pharmacology course into two courses and sent the Biological Basis of Addiction course to our consultant Steve. We completed a third round of usability of the remote, live standardized patient with 5 medical students. We created a draft of the Cynthia Stewart case to be used during the summative evaluation.
On 9/29, we were awarded an ARRA supplement grant to develop 4 RLSP cases and perform usability. We will complete this new ARRA project in tandem with the current alcohol project.
Progress During September 2009
Milestone 1
Develop Remaining Content Modules
Task 1: Develop Remaining Educational Content and Features for Modules
- In September, we split the Pharmacology course into two separate courses. Based on comments in usability, we eliminated confusing elements of the Resource section. We also conducted usability for MSL and the SPI. A report was written with these results. An action list was created on the intranet, and is being updated with the results of the usability sessions.
Task 2: Gather and Incorporate Feedback From Project Consultants
- Our consultant Steve is reviewing the Biological Basis of Addiction course. We are also interviewing medical students via phone for MSL usability. We also sent the completed Cynthia case to Steve for review.
Future Needs: We need to change parts of MSL and the SPI in accordance to the usability results.
Milestone 2
Complete Summative Evaluation of Product
Task 1: Design Evaluation
- The summative evaluation will be designed once we finalize our course structures.
Task 2: Recruit 80 Medical Students in their Second through Fourth Years of Study
- Recruitment for the summative evaluation will be completed once we finalize our course structures.
Task 3: Perform Summative Evaluation
- The summative evaluation will be performed once we finalize our course structures.
Task 4: Analyze Data
- Data analysis of the summative evaluation will be done once completed.
Future Needs: Once course content is finalized, we will recruit 80 medical students in their second through fourth years of study to perform a large-scale summative evaluation.
Milestone 3
Disseminate Results and Background Information About Curriculum
Task 1: Submit At Least One Article to a Peer-Reviewed Appropriate Publication
- Once we finalize the second half of the Pharma course (Pharmacotherapy) and receive summative data, we will submit an article of our results.
Task 2: Present Results to Two or More Appropriate Scientific Meetings and at the NIH’s Annual SBIR Showcase
- At present, we are awaiting consultant review so that we can present these initial results to upcoming conferences as well as get feedback from these audiences.
Task 3: Contact Leading Medical and Substance Abuse Organizations
- We met with Joey Woodyard, Director of the SP Program at UNC Hospitals, in September. Details of that visit can be found on the intranet. During this meeting, CTI found that live SP programs are very expensive to run, and that they are bound by strict time restrictions. They are interested in a potential consultant position or even a collaboration.
Future Needs: Once the other course and summative evaluation is completed, we will submit at least one article to a peer-reviewed appropriate publication, as well as presentation of results to two or more appropriate scientific meetings and at the NIH’s annual SBIR showcase. We need to determine details of the patient cases for the supplement grant will be integrated into the existing MSL framework.
