Need

Suicide continues to be the 11th leading cause of death in the United States, and represents a public health crisis. Improved education and training for professionals and school staff members will assist in improved risk assessment and intervention to decrease suicide.

Vision

Suicides will be prevented through proper identification, intervention, and referral of individuals who are at increased risk for suicide.

Mission

To provide learners with the knowledge and self-efficacy to perform clinical skills such as risk identification, assessment, treatment and management.

Target Audience

Health professionals, mental health professionals, school staff members and others interested in learning about suicide prevention.

Constraints

1. Not all states have mandated a certain amount of suicide prevention education for school staff members.

2. Providing as much customer service as needed for new groups.

3. Training was developed for health and mental health professionals and does not address the school staff member/student dynamic.

Strengths

1. EndingSuicide.com courses contain science and evidence-based content and incorporate instructional design techniques.

2. Courses are easily accessible and can be packaged as a suite of modules or stand alone modules.

3. An extensive resource list is provided for professionals to assist with locating mental health providers and suicide scales/assessments.

4. We have 5 NJ school districts using our modules for staff development.

Goal

1. Partner with schools across the country to provide staff education on suicide prevention

2. Respond in a timely, efficient manner to schools who show an interest in the EndingSuicide curriculum.

Objectives

1. Create a custom experience for interested schools and organizations that allows group leaders to track member progress.

2. Market experience to interested schools and organizations.

Evaluation

The impact of our suicide prevention course currently in use, "Introduction to Identification of Risk and Protective Factors in Suicide," was demonstrated via data from pre- and post-test scores for 258 high school staff members who took the course this spring. Significance testing (using the widely accepted p value of .05) indicated a significant increase in both knowledge and self-efficacy of the high school staff in identifying at-risk students, after taking our course. On average, knowledge scores rose 7.5%, and self-efficacy scores increased by 22%.

Findings

NJ educators were highly satisfied with the online learning experience provided by EndingSuicide.com. Knowledge, attitudes, intended behavior, and self-efficacy all improved significantly post-experience (p<.001) for the 3 courses most used by NJ educators (Introduction to Identification of Risk and Protective Factors in Suicide, Introduction to Suicide, and Identification of Risk and Protective Factors in Sucide).
