Key Details

Need

The Drug Addiction Treatment Act of 2000 (DATA 2000) enables trained physicians to offer office-based treatment for opioid addiction. Physicians need an alternative to on-site buprenorphine training programs that:

  1. Are available on-demand 24 hours a day, 7 days a week
  2. Are self-paced and can be completed from any computer
  3. Provide ongoing access to updated course materials and resources

Vision

Physicians can satisfy their DATA-2000 training requirement on their own schedule, from their home or office, and become waivered to prescribe buprenorphine for the treatment of opioid dependence.

Mission

Deliver an up-to-date, web-based solution for physicians who want to become qualified to prescribe buprenorphine for the treatment of opioid dependence.

Target Audience

Physicians who want to become waivered to prescribe buprenorphine who

  • have web experience
  • have limited time to travel to attend an onsite training or would prefer to complete the training from their home or office

Overall Constraints

  1. Treatment information is continually changing
  2. Must fit within the vision of the CTI Learning Management System
  3. Movement to the new content management system (CMS) environment?

User Constraints

  1. Some physicians may not have the technological sophistication to use a web-based training program
  2. Physicians may want to be able to ask questions and have more interaction during training

Strengths

  1. Available to users 24 hours a day, 7 days a week
  2. Self-paced
  3. Ongoing access to updated course materials
  4. ASAM partnership
  5. There are not many web-based trainings available
  6. Training already developed - low cost of maintenance?

Implementation

Competition and Collaboration

  • The AAAP is the other major organization that offers web-based and CD-ROM-based buprenorphine training. They also offer a "half and half" program and on-site trainings.
  • Onsite trainings: There are a number of day-long onsite trainingsoffered throughout the country.

Progress

  • As of 9/29/08, there were 906 completions of the BuprenorphineCME training program.
  • Contract with Baltimore Substance Abuse Systems, Inc, of the Baltimore Health Department
